GUWAHATI: The Secretary and the Director of the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment had a meeting with three organizations of people with disabilities today and assured them of solving their problems immediately.

The meeting came close on the heels of PSSA (Pratibandhi Suraksha Sanstha, Assam) threatening the state government of staging a Dispur gherao agitation on December 3, International Day of Persons with Disabilities, in support of their various demands. The other two organizations present at today’s meeting are Badhir Sangram Parishad and Madhya Assam Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha.

After the meeting, PSSA Secretary Nripen Malakar said, “We won’t sit idle anymore after the state government repeatedly deceived us on our genuine demands. The department assured us of fulfilling our demands. If they deceive us again, the situation will be disastrous. Though other states of the country have been extending all facilities in accordance with the relevant Act pertaining to people with disabilities, the Assam government has been depriving us of the minimal facilities provided under the relevant Act. Let alone other facilities, the government has been depriving over 1.60 lakh people with disabilities of Rs 1000 per month under the Deen Dayal Divyangjan Pension Scheme for two years. Based on the assurances given by the department, we have called off our agitation scheduled for December 3, 2024. However, if the department cannot solve our problems by December this year, we will start a fresh agitation from Magh Bihu.”
