GUWAHATI: The Assam State Primary Teachers' Association (ASPTA) has refuted Education Minister Ranoj Pegu's claim that the primary school teachers are trying to blackmail the State Government over conducting of Gunotsav 2023.

The ASPTA said in a statement addressing the Education Minister on Wednesday: "Don't make us blackmailers. We have not done any blackmailing in the name of Guntosav."

The ASPTA also urged Pegu: "Prove your honesty and efficiency by fulfilling the commitment made to us on July 11, 2022."

The ASPTA said that instead of engaging in a war of words with the primary school teachers, the Education Minister should try and resolve their problems.

It may be recalled that the AAPTA said recently that every primary school in the State would be under lock and key during the ensuing Gunotsav 2023 if the Government did not fulfil the teachers' demands within December 31 next. These demands include creation of headmasters/headmistresses' posts in primary schools, restoration of the monthly deduction of Rs 8,700 from the Grade Pay of graduate teachers and regularization of the services of contractual teachers and grant of due benefits to them.

Earlier, reacting to the primary school teachers' threat to State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu told the teachers not to blackmail the Government over Gunotsav as the government is trying to solve teachers' problems in a phased manner.
