GUWAHATI: A massive protest was organized by the Assam State Committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) outside the regional office of the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) in Bamunimaidam, Guwahati. The protest demanded the improvements in the ESI scheme, including an increase in the wage ceiling for ESI coverage to Rs. 35,000.

The protesters also demanded that the ESI Corporation provide better healthcare services, including the establishment of more ESI dispensaries and hospitals. They also sought the inclusion of workers engaged in the ICDS, NHM, and POSHAN (Mid-Day-Meal) schemes under the ESI.

CITU’s Assam State General Secretary, Tapan Sharma, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the need for better ESI coverage and healthcare services for workers. He also criticized the existing ESI system, which often denies benefits to workers due to its rigid referral system. The protesters submitted a memorandum to the regional director of ESI, Guwahati, assured them that he would take immediate steps to address the issues raised in the memorandum.
