BEEO of Rani in Kamrup district arrested with bribe

GUWAHATI/PALASBARI: Sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti- Corruption, Assam (V&AC) on Wednesday arrested the Block Elementary Education Officer (BEEO) of Rani in the Kamrup district, one Lachit Basumatary, after catching him red-handed while accepting a bribe for processing the transfer application of a teacher.

According to sources, Basumatary was arrested after the husband of the teacher in question lodged a complaint with the V&AC that the BEEO had demanded a bribe for processing pending transfer-related work. A trap was accordingly laid near the office of the BEEO and Basumatary was caught red-handed in his office chamber along with the bribe amount. The bribe amount was seized from Basumatary's possession in the presence of independent witnesses.

During further search of his personal Bolero vehicle, an amount of Rs 1 lakh in cash was recovered by the V&AC team, the sources said, adding that a search of Basumatary's residence is also being carried out.

The sources informed that a case (28/2022 u/s 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) has been registered in the ACB Police Station against Basumatary.
