GUWAHATI: In a proud moment for Assam’s capital, Guwahati has been conferred the Promising Swachh Shehar Award under the 3 to 10 lakh population category in the prestigious Swachh Survekshan 2024 rankings. The city secured the 44th position nationally, affirming its steady strides in cleanliness, sanitation, and urban management.

A delegation from the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) met Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday to apprise him of this significant achievement. The Chief Minister extended his congratulations to the GMC team, applauding their sustained efforts in advancing urban sanitation. “This milestone is a testament to Guwahati’s evolving civic ecosystem and reflects Assam’s broader vision of inclusive and people-driven development,” he said.

The award was officially presented on July 17, 2025, at a national felicitation ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania received the accolade on behalf of the city, amidst the presence of senior dignitaries and representatives from urban local bodies across the country.

In addition to the award, Guwahati also earned ODF+ (Open Defecation Free Plus) certification and was accorded One Star Garbage Free City (GFC) status—key benchmarks under the Swachh Bharat Mission that underscore the city’s commitment to sustainable urban sanitation practices.

Commissioner Dr. M.S. Lakshmi Priya, IAS, expressed her appreciation for the unwavering support of the Government of Assam and acknowledged the crucial role played by sanitation workers, municipal staff, and residents. “This recognition is the outcome of collective effort, community involvement, and our team’s relentless pursuit of a cleaner Guwahati,” she noted.

With this national honour, Guwahati strengthens its position as a model city in the Northeast, paving the way for deeper civic engagement and future innovation in urban governance.
