GUWAHATI: The Assam Government is going to distribute appointment letters to 4,600 existing additional (contractual) teachers as regular graduate teachers working in various secondary schools on February 15 at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma will give away the appointment letters.
The Director of School Education, Mamata Hojai, has asked the inspectors of schools of all districts to inform all the existing additional (contractual) teachers to remain present at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra on February 15, 2025.
The government appointed additional (contractual) teachers in 2010 on a merit basis when a survey revealed that many of the schools did not have adequate teachers, and that led many students to perform poorly on some subjects in the HSLC examination. After that appointment, the performance of students in those schools improved.
After that, the additional contractual teachers demanded regularisation of their posts. In 2016, the state cabinet decided to regularise the posts of the contractual teachers, but the cabinet decision was not executed. In 2020, the Cabinet made another decision to make the posts of those additional contractual teachers almost regular, but the government stopped short of implementing all the assurances given.
On September 13, 2024, the Cabinet made yet another decision to regularize the posts of the additional contractual teachers and sought online applications from them. The process will be completed on February 15, 2025, with the distribution of appointment letters.
