GUWAHATI: The residents of Guwahati face many problems regularly, and parking vehicles is definitely one of the most frustrating. While the city lacks proper places for parking vehicles, the inability of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to maintain the existing ones through proper lessees remains a cause of anger among the citizens. Although GMC had very proudly announced that parking would remain free in several (43 to be exact) key points of the city earlier this year, they failed to notify the public as to when they allotted a particular lessee to collect parking fees from the public, resulting in conflict between the public and the people collecting money.
Talking to the Sentinel, one such citizen mentioned, “We have our office in the busy six-mile area, and there is hardly any space to park our vehicles. Previously, the area between the Six Mile flyover and the Rukminigaon point used to be free parking with the exception of the area near the church, but a few days ago, one very abusive person came demanding money in the name of parking, saying that a lot had been paid to the GMC for collecting the fees and that they needed to recover the same. “
With a part of the parking space under the Six Mile Flyover closed for nearly a year in the name of reconstruction of the flyover and another part being occupied by the vehicles from GNRC, there is hardly any space for the public to park their vehicles. Another person said, “These people are never seen when you try to park your vehicle, but at the very moment you want to take your vehicle out, they pop out of nowhere demanding money. Also, no one cares about your vehicle getting dents or scratches, as these people do not care about how people park their vehicles.”
