Guwahati: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Wednesday expressed serious concern over the rising incidents of sexual violence against women in the state.

Addressing the media at Rajiv Bhavan, APCC working president Roselina Tirkey and Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur highlighted what they termed as an “alarming spike” in such crimes across Assam.

Tirkey referred to a brutal incident that occurred on May 28 in Tinsukia district, where a minor girl belonging to the Tea Tribe community was allegedly raped and murdered in a tea garden. She demanded immediate and stringent action against the culprits, urging the authorities to ensure that justice is served without delay. Borthakur also brought attention to another tragic case from Bordubi in Tinsukia, where the mother of a rape victim died by suicide, reportedly unable to cope with the trauma and injustice faced by her daughter. She further accused a BJP Youth Morcha leader of being involved in a separate rape case, criticizing the ruling party for what she claimed was a failure to curb rising sexual crimes.

The Mahila Congress president alleged that recent claims of a decline in crimes against women in Assam are misleading. She accused the state government of instructing police stations not to register rape cases in a bid to manipulate official crime statistics, suggesting that the move was intended to keep Assam’s crime rate lower than states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. In response to the Tinsukia incident, the APCC has constituted an 11-member committee under the directive of party president Gaurav Gogoi. The committee will conduct an on-the-ground investigation into the rape and murder case in the tea estate and has been tasked with submitting its findings within a stipulated timeframe.
