Guwahati: In a major breakthrough, Dispur Police on Thursday busted a large inter-state car theft racket and arrested four key members of the gang from neighbouring Meghalaya. The arrests mark a significant step in cracking down on an organized network involved in smuggling stolen vehicles across state and international borders.
According to police officials, the gang was actively stealing vehicles from various locations across Assam and trafficking them to Bangladesh through a well-coordinated operation. The four individuals arrested are believed to be central figures in the cross-border syndicate, which has been under surveillance for some time.
“These arrests are crucial in disrupting a long-running vehicle theft and smuggling network. The gang had links stretching beyond state borders and even across international boundaries,” said a senior police officer involved in the investigation.
The operation was launched following intelligence inputs and surveillance tracing the gang’s movement across Assam and into Meghalaya. The successful joint effort led to the apprehension of the suspects and recovery of vital evidence, though police have not yet disclosed the number of vehicles involved.
Authorities believe that the racket includes a broader network of operatives, including local handlers, transporters, and cross-border facilitators. Police teams are currently conducting further investigations and more arrests are expected in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the arrested suspects are being interrogated, and legal proceedings have been initiated.
