Guwahati: In a proud moment for Assamese music, eminent musician Dr. Aparna Buzarbarua has been honoured with the prestigious Salil Chowdhury Award for Best Music Director at the 5th International Star Film Festival, held at Swami Vivekananda Hall in Kolkata.
The festival, which commemorated the centenary of legendary music director Salil Chowdhury, featured participation from 65 countries, with awards presented in 47 categories. Dr. Buzarbarua’s song “Roon Jhoon Jhoon,” for which she composed the lyrics, melody, and music arrangement, won the Best Music Video Award, adding another feather to her cap. The song is rendered by Dr. Sangita Kakati and features a mesmerizing dance performance by Meghranjani Medhi. Directed by Antareep Hazarika, the music video has already bagged four awards.
Born and raised in the culturally rich town of Tezpur, Dr. Buzarbarua began her career as a botany professor at Cotton College in 1969 and retired as the head of the department in 2003. A pioneering figure in Assamese music, she holds the rare distinction of being the first recognized female music director of All India Radio (AIR) Guwahati in 2008. Having composed over 100 songs and collaborating with eminent lyricists, she is also a distinguished author.
Expressing her joy, Dr. Buzarbarua remarked that this recognition is an encouraging milestone for Assamese music, showcasing its growing presence on the international stage.
