Guwahati: It was just a matter of Rs 9000. A Guwahati based school did not allow a class nine student to sit for his half-yearly exams just because his parents could not pay Rs 9000 as fees. The parents have filed an FIR and have requested state education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to initiate action against the authorities of the school.

The whole episode has turned into a blame game. The parents are blaming the teachers and the school authorities while the teachers are blaming the student and his parents for blowing things out of proportion.

The parents of the class nine student could not pay the dues as they were going through hard times post COVID lockdown. But they were totally taken aback when the teachers of Manab Kalyan Jatiya Vidyalay did not allow their son to sit for his half-yearly exams.

Altercations and arguments took place between the family and the teachers and finally, the parents filed an FIR.

What is sad is the fact that barely for Rs 9000, a child's future is at stake.

The principal of the school said," We did not restrict him from appearing exams, but when we called his parents at school and asked them to write an application mentioning when they will clear the fees, they rather than discussing the matter politely, made an issue of it."
