Guwahati: In a significant step towards urban modernization, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has launched a comprehensive redevelopment project at - Ganeshguri Junction that, like every other street in Guwahati, has literally turned into a vending zone.

The project aims to transform the area into a more pedestrian-friendly and well-organized urban space.

Under the Ganeshguri Junction Redevelopment Project, the GMC has begun widening the footpaths in and around the junction to improve walkability, streamline traffic flow, and enhance the daily commuting experience. Officials emphasize that the redesigned walkways will not only provide more room for pedestrians but also improve safety and ease of movement, particularly during peak hours when the area sees a surge in foot traffic.

“Ganeshguri experiences a high volume of both vehicles and pedestrians every day. Through this redevelopment, we aim to reduce congestion and bring a more organized and cleaner appearance to the area,” said a GMC spokesperson.

The initiative is part of a broader urban infrastructure overhaul being undertaken by city authorities, focusing on the transformation of key traffic junctions. In addition to the widened pavements, the redevelopment blueprint includes the installation of improved road signage, development of efficient drainage systems, and creation of designated zones for street vendors to prevent unregulated encroachments on footpaths.

Local residents, commuters, and shopkeepers have expressed optimism about the project, stating that the facelift could bring much-needed relief from daily traffic snarls, haphazard parking, and encroached walkways that have long plagued the locality.

With work already in progress, Ganeshguri Junction is on track to emerge as a model urban space—where accessibility, safety, and aesthetics come together to offer a smoother and more pleasant experience for all.
