GUWAHATI: Following the recent intervention of the Gauhati High Court, the West Bengal police finally arrested Garga Chatterjee on July 28 last in Kolkata in connection with a case registered by the Crime Branch of the Guwahati police over his derogatory comments about Chaolung Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom dynasty in Assam. However, Chatterjee was later released on bail by the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Alipore, with the condition that he will have to appear before the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (M) "positively within 17/09/2022".

The West Bengal court further directed Chatterjee to inform it by September 30 about compliance with the order to appear before the court Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (M).

These facts came to light in reports submitted recently by the Kolkata Police to the Gauhati High Court.

It may be recalled that the Gauhati High Court had issued show-cause notices in June last to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal and the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata over the reported non-cooperation of that State's police with the Assam Police in executing arrest warrants issued against Garga Chatterjee, who made certain objectionable remarks against the founder of the Ahom dynasty, Swargadeo Sukapha. The Crime Branch of Guwahati police had registered a suo moto case (10/2020) against Chatterjee and an advocate named Banashree Gogoi later filed an FIR against Chatterjee at the Latasil Police Station. Both the cases are being investigated by the Crime Branch. The High Court issued the show-causes notices during hearing of a Writ Petition (3637/2020) after the State Government's counsel informed it that two separate non-bailable arrest warrants against Chatterjee, issued by the SDJM court, could not be executed due to lack of assistance from the West Bengal Police.
