Guwahati: 43rd death anniversary of trade union leader observed in city

GUWAHATI: The 43rd death anniversary of the late Atul Chandra Saikia, founder general secretary of the State Transport Workers’ Association (STWA), noted freedom fighter, trade union leader of international repute and former member of the Assam Legislative Assembly, was observed at the STWA central office at ASTC, Paltan Bazar, Guwahati, this morning.

On behalf of the union, Hamid Ali, president; Biplob Baruah, general secretary; Bubul Kalita; Pranjal Saikia; Nur Hussain; Gautam Saikia; Koibor Ali ; Rafiqul Ali and others paid floral tributes at the portrait of the late Saikia. Mr Atanu Saikia, son of the late Saikia, also attended the function for which a naam prasanga was organized.

Late Saikia was associated with 25 trade unions in the state and was its founder general secretary since its establishment in 1958 till his death on June 1, 1982. He was also the general secretary of the All India Transport Workers’ Federation, an umbrella organization of the unions of different state transport corporations in the country for decades. He was also a member of different boards/corporations of both central and state governments as a representative of workers and was a member of the ASTC board from its inception till his death. He represented Indian workers several times in ILO and other international forums.
