GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has promised to hike the daily wages of MGNREGA, besides putting an end to corruption in schemes targeting the rural population as beneficiaries.
Releasing its manifesto for the panchayat poll at Rajiv Bhawan here today, APCC president Bhupen Borah said that the manifesto focused on eradicating corruption and that there were allegations of BJP ministers being involved in financial scandals.
Borah said, “We’ll take measures to investigate the corrupt practices, including the formation of an inquiry committee to look into the financial irregularities in several districts.”
Borah said, “The Congress will fulfil the promises made in the manifesto. The delay in conducting the panchayat election in the state has been one of the central issues in the run-up to the polls. It took a court intervention and 11 months for the state government to finally declare the panchayat poll schedule. This is a clear violation of the democratic process. The Congress is committed to the principles of Panchayati Raj and rural empowerment as envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi.”
Former APCC president Ripun Bora said, “The BJP government at the Centre renamed the IAY (Indira Awas Yojana) as PMAY (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana) but failed to deliver any significant outcome. The state has many incomplete PMAY houses; eligible beneficiaries have been deprived of benefits. If the Congress wins the poll, we will complete the incomplete PMAY houses first, besides granting houses to the deprived beneficiaries.”
Bora further said, “Many MGNREGA job cardholders did not get work. Only 6402 of the 64.98 lakh job cardholders got work under MGNREGA in the past two years. If the Congress wins the poll, we’ll ensure at least 100 days of work for every household in a year.”
