GUWAHATI: The Asom Sanmilita Morcha (ASOM) has expressed strong resentment over the BJP’s landslide win in the recent Panchayat elections. According to ASOM, the BJP’s victory was achieved by compromising democratic values.

In a joint press release, ASOM alliance president and Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, along with general secretary and Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, alleged that the ruling party misused government machinery, police, and welfare schemes to influence the election outcome. They also accused some BJP leaders of importing unethical practices from other states, using money and muscle power to secure wins.

The ASOM leaders claimed that the BJP’s sweeping victory has falsely projected an image of widespread popularity in Assam. They emphasized that to defeat the BJP, which they described as anti-democratic and anti-people, opposition unity is crucial. Bhuyan and Gogoi pointed out that the BJP’s past victories were often due to fragmented opposition votes, and this election was no different.

The ASOM leaders stressed the need for all secular and democratic parties to unite to create an environment that can challenge the BJP’s dominance, particularly ahead of the 2026 elections. They believe that only through unity the opposition can effectively counter the BJP’s strategies and offer a viable alternative to the people of Assam.
