Guwahati: Assam State Zoo Names Lion Cubs

GUWAHATI: The Assam State Zoo has officially named its newborn lion cubs, Assam Environment and Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary announced on X. The cubs born to lioness Kesari have been named Jaya and Vijaya, while those born to lioness Rani have been named Durga and Devika. The names symbolize strength, victory, and divinity, reflecting the majestic nature of the species.

In addition to the lion cubs, the Assam State Zoo recently expanded its wildlife diversity through an animal exchange programme with Chhatbir Zoo in Punjab. As part of the exchange, seven new species have been introduced to the zoo, including the Comb Duck, Chukar Partridge, and Java Sparrow.

The initiative aims to enhance biodiversity and conservation efforts while offering visitors a more diverse wildlife experience. Zoo officials expressed optimism about the growing animal population and emphasized their commitment to wildlife preservation.
