Guwahati: The Assam Pollution Control Board (APCB) has issued a directive mandating all industries located in the Byrnihat Critically Polluted Area (CPA) to implement a comprehensive set of dust suppression and fugitive emission control measures. The circular, issued from the Board’s Regional Office in Guwahati, follows the Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Abatement Action Plan formulated for the Byrnihat Industrial Cluster.

According to the notice, all industries must submit a time-bound implementation plan within 15 days from the date of issuance. In addition, industries are required to submit quarterly action-taken reports, failing which legal action will be initiated under applicable environmental legislation.

The mandated measures include installing enclosures at material handling points, deploying bag filters at transfer points in red and orange category industries, incorporating water spraying systems within premises, and ensuring all internal roads are fully paved. Cement and fly-ash brick industries must pneumatically pump fly-ash in a closed loop from tankers to silos.

Red and orange category units must also designate a “Dust Control Personnel” and maintain detailed records of air pollution control device maintenance. Moreover, red category industries are instructed to install wheel-washing bays at entry and exit points. All units are required to formulate and implement an annual tree plantation plan.
