Guwahati: Leader of the Opposition in Assam, Debabrata Saikia, has written to the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) seeking urgent intervention to protect the Ahom-era monuments, including Rang Ghar and Talatal Ghar, from potential damage due to waterlogging and upcoming tourism projects.

Citing media reports, Saikia highlighted that the Rang Ghar monument has been submerged in water for over two days, raising fears that prolonged exposure to moisture could deteriorate the centuries-old structure, which was built using traditional materials and techniques. In his letter to INTACH, Saikia has requested an expert assessment of the structural condition of these heritage sites.

(ii) Preservation guidelines to ensure sustainable development alongside tourism projects.

(iii) Technical assistance for heritage-sensitive infrastructure planning and visitor management.

(iv) Awareness programmes to educate local communities on the importance of preservation.

The Assam government recently announced a tourism development project near these monuments. While acknowledging the benefits of tourism, Saikia stressed the need for careful planning to prevent inadvertent harm to the fragile historical structures.
