Guwahati: Cotton University Holds 3rd Convocation, and 3001 Students Receive Degrees

The third convocation of Cotton University was held today at the Srimanta Sankardeva International Auditorium at Kalakshetra, Guwahati.

Journalist Kanaksen Deka conferred with honorary D.Litt

GUWAHATI: The third convocation of Cotton University was held today at the Srimanta Sankardeva International Auditorium at Kalakshetra, Guwahati. Degrees were conferred upon 3001 students, which include 86 PhDs, 1658 postgraduates, 1240 undergraduates, and 17 diplomas. Additionally, 128 students were conferred gold medals for their exemplary performance in academics.

Eminent journalist and litterateur Kanaksen Deka was conferred upon with the honorary D.Litt. degree for his significant contribution to journalism, Assamese literature, and culture. Two students of the BA Programme for Sportspersons—Riyan Parag and Anyatam Rajkonwar—also received their degrees on Wednesday.

Designed for budding sportspeople of the region, it is a flagship programme offered by the varsity. Dignitaries present at the occasion were Assam Governor and Chancellor of Cotton University, Lakshman Prasad Acharya; Vice Chancellor of Maharashtra State Skills University, Prof. Apoorva Palkar; and former Director of IIT, Guwahati, Prof. Gautam Barua.

Extending his wishes to the degree holders, the Governor of Assam urged the students to dedicate themselves to hard work during Amrit Kaal, seizing this transformative period to build a stronger and self-reliant India. He also congratulated the university fraternity for dedication and sincerity and the institution on getting an A grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). “Moving forward and taking inspiration from its rich past, Cotton University has a huge role to play in nation-building. It needs to aim at transforming itself into a research-intensive institution. The graduating students should strive to build a new India—a Viksit Bharat. It is upon them now to shoulder the responsibility of advancing our state and the country with their skills, knowledge, and hard work,” he said.

Vice Chancellor of Maharashtra State Skills University, Prof. Apoorva Palkar, who delivered the convocation address, urged the graduating students to dream big and to work hard to realise their dreams while remembering the importance of being a good human being.

 Presenting his report, Vice Chancellor of Cotton University, Prof. Ramesh Chandra Deka, highlighted the achievements of the varsity in different aspects since the last convocation held on May 27, 2022. These include the adoption of the four-year undergraduate programme in alignment with the NEP, 2020, multiple entry and exit policy, fully functional Academic Bank of Credits, enhanced industry-academia collaboration, varsity’s successful participation in CUET and alignment of the admission process with the SAMARTH portal, activation of One-Nation-One-Subscription (ONOS) in the central library, developments in research activities, etc., to name a few, a press release said.
