Guwahati: In a major crackdown on child labour, six children were rescued on Thursday from hazardous workplaces and construction sites in the Basistha area of Guwahati. The rescue operation was led by the Assam Centre for Rural Development (ACRD) in coordination with the District Level Child Labour Task Force.
The joint operation also involved officials from the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Childline, and several partner NGOs. It was launched following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of child labourers in the area.
After being rescued, the minors were brought to Basistha Police Station, where they underwent medical examinations. Police personnel facilitated the necessary legal and procedural steps to ensure the children’s immediate protection.
Authorities confirmed that the rescued children would be presented before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), which will assess each case and determine appropriate steps for their rehabilitation, including possible reintegration with their families or placement in child care institutions.
“This operation reflects our commitment to eradicating child labour and protecting vulnerable children from exploitation,” said an official involved in the rescue.
Further investigations are underway to identify the employers responsible for engaging the minors, and legal action is expected to follow.
