Guwahati: The All Dimasa Students’ Union (ADSU) has alleged a serious case of caste-based violence in Guwahati and has demanded immediate legal action under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The demand follows an incident on the night of August 3, in which two Dimasa students were allegedly assaulted and subjected to casteist abuse outside Times Square Mall on Zoo Road.

The victims — Maikel Nunisa (20) and Maiham Hasnu (21), both hailing from Dhansiri in Karbi Anglong — were employed as part-time security guards while pursuing their studies. According to the complaint filed by ADSU with Assam DGP Harmeet Singh, Maikel was managing traffic near the mall when he was reportedly struck by a red Maruti Swift. When he questioned the driver, an altercation broke out, during which the occupants — allegedly under the influence of alcohol — physically assaulted both students and hurled caste-based slurs.

A video of the assault has gone viral on social media, prompting outrage from tribal communities and student bodies across the state. ADSU described the incident as a “targeted caste-based hate crime” and urged authorities to take strict action by invoking relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and the SC/ST Atrocities Act.
