Guwahati: The illegal dumping of construction materials on public streets has become a recurring issue in the city, causing inconveniences and safety hazards for residents and commuters. Piles of sand, gravel, bricks, and debris are frequently seen along roadsides. This results in extreme traffic and narrowing pedestrian pathways.

Apart from creating traffic bottlenecks, these materials contribute significantly to dust pollution, further deteriorating the air quality for nearby residents.

Addressing the issue, Guwahati Mayor, Mrigen Sarania said, “We ensure that proper fines are imposed and steps are taken if any such instances are witnessed. We also encourage people to report such activities to us, and at times, we confiscate construction materials that block roads or create a nuisance for residents.”

Citizens, however, have demanded stricter enforcement and the establishment of clear guidelines for construction projects. Suggestions include creating designated dumping zones and imposing hefty fines on violators. Residents believe that immediate action is necessary to curb this growing problem and ensure that Guwahati’s streets remain safe, accessible, and free from such hazards.

Authorities have urged residents to report instances of illegal dumping to help tackle the issue effectively. Meanwhile, the GMC has assured us that it will continue to take proactive measures to address the problem.
