Guwahati: Elderly people are now becoming easy targets for criminals. In a chilling incident, a 71-year-old woman, Bandana Das, was found murdered in her residence at Kharghuli, Guwahati, under gruesome and suspicious circumstances.

Bandana, who had been living alone since the death of her husband in 2001, was found dead inside her room on Wednesday morning. According to police, her throat was slit using a sharp object.

Police sources said that suspicion has fallen on her care taker, Ratul Das, a mason by profession, and his wife. The duo had been provided shelter by Bandana’s brother in the same boundary where she lives. Police along with CID and forensic team came to the spot and collected the evidence. Forensic experts have collected Ratul Das’s fingerprints for examination.

Adding to the mystery, investigators revealed that a few days ago, two daily wage workers were called to clean the boundary, during which a sickle was reportedly used. The same sickle was recovered from the premises during the investigation. However, police have clarified that the actual murder weapon has not yet been found.

City police, led by senior officials, visited the crime scene and launched a full-scale investigation. Preliminary findings suggest it was a planned murder. DCP (Central) Amitabh Basumatary, who inspected the site, confirmed that all evidence points towards homicide. Eventhough police have taken Ratul and his wife under suspicion they have also started investigating other sides.
