Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has imposed a fine of Rs 6,000 on a resident of Hafiz Nagar for obstructing a public road by dumping coconut tree branches, causing inconvenience to commuters and pedestrians.
According to GMC officials, the individual had trimmed a coconut tree but failed to dispose of the cut branches properly, leaving them scattered on the road. This led to traffic disruptions and complaints from local residents. Acting on reports from field staff and public grievances, the GMC swiftly penalized the individual under relevant municipal bylaws.
The civic body has urged citizens to carry out tree maintenance activities responsibly, ensuring that public pathways and roads remain free of obstructions.
“While we encourage residents to nurture greenery, it must not come at the cost of public inconvenience or violation of civic rules,” a GMC official said. The corporation has also warned that repeat offenders or those causing deliberate obstruction in public spaces will face stricter penalties.
