Guwahati: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Guwahati, in collaboration with Young Indians (Yi), observed the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Thursday at the Shri Madhavdev International Auditorium, Kalakshetra. The event marked the culmination of a two-week-long awareness campaign (June 12–26) under the theme “Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life.”

The programme featured deeply moving survivor accounts by Jahangir Ansari and Rahul Sheikh, who bravely shared their journeys from addiction to recovery. Their testimonies served as powerful reminders of the destructive nature of drug abuse—and the hope that healing is possible with timely intervention and community support.

Delivering the keynote address, Prakash Ranjan Mishra, Additional Director of NCB, Guwahati, underlined the urgent need for sustained awareness and joint action. “While Assam has made significant strides in curbing drug trafficking and abuse, there is still a long way to go. Community involvement, especially among youth, is essential,” Mishra stated.

He also promoted MANAS (Madak Padarth Nishedh Asuchna Kendra), a 24x7 national helpline accessible via toll-free number 1933, along with a dedicated web portal and mobile app for de-addiction support and anonymous reporting of drug-related incidents.

A panel discussion titled “Democracy United Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking,” moderated by senior journalist Mrinal Talukdar, brought together stakeholders from law enforcement, civil society, and academia to explore collaborative strategies in the war against narcotics.
