GUWAHATI: The menace of chain snatching is going unabated in Guwahati. Miscreants committing this crime generally target aged women. Of late, the Guwahati police sniffed the involvement of a section of jewellers playing an important role by buying snatched chains and other gold ornaments at cheap rates.
Based on the confessional statements of three snatchers – Kishor Medhi, alias Chintu; Dipangkar Karmakar, alias Babu; and Amir Ali – Basistha police raided two jewellers’ shops – Jaishankar Refinery Jewllery Shop and Aparna Jewellery Shop – at Lakhtakia in Guwahati. The police seized 3 kg of gold and silver ornaments and bars. The police apprehended the owners of these two jewellery shops – Hemant Anand Rao Yadav, alias Raju, and Anis Chetry – in that connection. The police said these two jewellers are regular receivers of stolen gold and silver.
