GUWAHATI: In a major crackdown against illicit activities, an East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) team from Basistha Police Station conducted a raid at Patorkuchi yesterday after receiving credible intelligence regarding the presence of illegal teer gambling activity in the area.
The swift operation by the cops led to the apprehension of a suspect identified as 39-year-old Sanjay Gupta, who currently resides at Beharbari under the jurisdiction of Basistha Police Station in Kamrup (Metro) district but the accused originally hails from Dalan Chappra Village under Dokati Police Station in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh.
Several items related to the illegal activity were confiscated from the spot during the raid. The police seized illegal teer books, a mobile phone and cash amounting to Rs. 590.
According to the police, the arrested individual was involved in selling teer tickets illegally in the area and was caught red-handed during the raid.
A case has been registered by the Basistha police and a detailed probe is underway to identify other people possibly involved in the racket.
This successful operation demonstrates the Assam police's ongoing efforts to crackdown on illegal gambling operations and maintain law and order. The public has also been urged to report any suspicious gambling activity and the cops have assured stern action against those found involved in such crimes.
