Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) recently carried out a joint inspection drive targeting meat and fish retail outlets across the city.
The operation was conducted by the GMC’s Veterinary Branch and Enforcement Branch in collaboration with the District Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, Kamrup (M), and the Food Safety Officer. The inspection spanned key localities, including Silpukhuri, Chandmari, Bamunimaidam, Hatigarh Chariali, Narengi, and Satgaon. A total of 38 retail shops selling poultry, fish, eggs, and mutton were inspected for compliance with hygiene and safety norms.
Officials identified multiple violations such as unsanitary conditions, improper handling, and unsafe storage of food items. Consequently, penalties amounting to Rs 20,500 were imposed on several violators. Authorities have reiterated that such drives will be conducted regularly and have urged all vendors to strictly adhere to hygiene protocols to ensure the health and safety of consumers.
