GUWAHATI: Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania said that the GMC will carry out a special drive for the collection of property holding tax and traders’ registration renewal tax. He said that the civic body might cease property holding and cancellation of traders’ registration in accordance with the GMC Act if they do not pay taxes.

Speaking to the media today, the mayor said, “The civic body’s target for revenue collection was Rs 130 crore in the financial year 2024-25. However, until February 25, the civic body collected only Rs 80 crore in property taxes. Guwahati has 50,000 holdings that have not yet paid their property tax. They paid property tax last year. The civic body collected Rs 27.17 crore through the renewal of trade licenses. However, the city has 25,000 traders who haven’t yet renewed their trade licenses.”

The mayor said that the property holders and traders who will clear their taxes this financial year will get some exemptions in the financial year 2025-26. If they clear their taxes by April 2025, they will get a 10 percent exemption and a five percent exemption if they pay taxes in May 2025.

He said that the late fine for delayed payment of taxes will be hiked from the existing 10 percent to 20 percent next year.
