Guwahati: In the narrow lanes of Guwahati's Beltola area, life has turned into a nightmare as an open garbage fire continues to smoulder for nearly two months.

Residents and commuters are grappling with relentless smoke that has engulfed the area, raising serious health concerns and forcing people to stay indoors. The dumping ground, reportedly used by the railways near Ajanta Path, has become the epicentre of the crisis.

Speaking to this reporter, a resident of the area said, "This garbage fire has been burning slowly for almost two months. The smoke has engulfed our area, and many elderly people are falling sick." The issue has also disrupted outdoor activities.

A cyclist, speaking to The Sentinel, said, "I highlighted the plight of morning commuters. Cycling in the morning is supposed to be refreshing, but with this waste fire, it's anything but that. The smoke is unbearable," he said, pointing to the thick haze that has become a daily nuisance.

The cyclist further added, "Elderly people are coughing constantly, and children can't even step outside to play. The air feels toxic. How much longer do we have to suffer like this?"

Local residents have demanded urgent intervention from the authorities to extinguish the fire and address the issue of waste management in the area. Despite the growing health crisis, no significant action has been taken to resolve the problem.

Experts warn that prolonged exposure to the smoke could have severe health implications, particularly for children and the elderly, who are more vulnerable to respiratory issues. As the situation worsens, residents continue to wait for relief, hoping that the authorities will step in before the crisis escalates further.
