Guwahati: The Government Railway Police (GRP) on Monday seized opium worth Rs 1.4 crore and also apprehended two persons from Bihar in connection to the seizure.
The nabbed persons were identified as Abhyas Kumar and Sunil Kumar.
As per reports, the GRP nabbed two persons after they were seen in a suspicious manner at Guwahati Railway Station.
Upon frisking them, the GRP recovered over 2 kilograms of opium from their undergarments.
Reportedly, both of them were carrying the opium from Dimapur to Bihar.
Meanwhile, further investigation is underway into the matter.
In May this year, in a major breakthrough against inter-state smugglers and illegal wholesale dealers trading in opium, team Assam Police's Bordumsa unit in Tinsukia district arrested a drugs kingpin from along the Assam-Arunachal border area.
According to police sources, one Rajen Moran (45), son of Puneswar Moran, was arrested from his residence along with a huge cache of contraband substances.
"Following confidential reports, we raided the Talpother residence of the accused who was caught red-handed during the act of inhaling the substances and we recovered as much as 260 grams of opium in the search during the raid," said Nitu N Changmai, OC Bordumsa police station, who had recently sounded alert to drug smugglers upon arresting two peddlers operating near a fish market along the Assam-Arunachal border in Bordumsa.
"Being a resident of an advantageous location like Talpother, the accused Moran had become a nucleus operating along the inter-state opium market unobstructed thereby procuring the contraband from nearby Diyun, Innao and Mudoi areas of Arunachal's Changlang district," added one of the police officials of the district.
"I once again urge the smugglers and peddlers trading illegally in various contraband substances across the district to shun the dark path and explore other economic activities. Do not compel Tinsikia police to adopt severe preventive measures,"said Debojit Deori, Tinsukia Superintendent of Police.
