GUWAHATI: Paltan Bazar police on Monday arrested a rickshaw puller for allegedly possessing a 7.62 mm pistol and five live cartridges.

The arrested rickshaw puller has been identified as Ajay Kumar Prasad, originally hailing from Bihar.

The police seized the pistol and five live bullets from his possession and initiated an investigation into the case.

Mystery surrounds the case as police are trying to figure out why the rickshaw puller was carrying the gun and ammunition.

Police are also trying to ascertain if Ajay has links with the mafia or 'supari' (contract) killers from outside the state.

On being asked if the rickshaw puller had any connection to the supari killers in Bihar, Police commissioner Harmeet Singh said, "Let us not make random conjectures right now, as we want to find out the actual reason behind the recovery of the pistol and bullets from his possession. Also, there hasn't been a single pistol killing in the city recently, so there has to be something else in the story. I have asked the DCP to investigate this issue."

In February, a businessman was killed in an incident of firing in Guwahati's Chatribari area. After shooting the victim, two bike-borne accused fled the spot.

According to a report by Sentinel Assam, the family member of the deceased named Avdesh Kumar Yadav suspected that some contract killers had been hired to execute the killing.

According to the report, two bullets were shot in his chest, while three were fired in the air. While Yadav was rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to death due to bullet wounds.

Yadav, a successful businessman in the city, owned four garment shops and a hardware shop. He also had a garment shop in Imphal and light trucks.
