Guwahati: Heavy rainfall lashed Guwahati in the morning of April 17, leading to waterlogging and flash floods in several parts of the city, including the Geetanagar area. The unexpected deluge caused severe disruptions to daily life, with roads submerged and residents facing difficulties commuting.
Despite it being well ahead of the official monsoon season, the intensity of the rainfall and its immediate impact on the city’s drainage system have raised concerns among locals. Geetanagar was among the worst-hit areas, with many homes and streets inundated.
Speaking to this reporter, a local resident expressed frustration over the recurring issue. “Monsoon is yet to start, but the flood condition has already started. We don’t understand what the government did to solve the issue just by sanctioning money,” the resident said, highlighting public scepticism over the efficacy of flood mitigation measures.
The city has long struggled with poor drainage infrastructure, and every year, pre-monsoon rains expose the fragile civic preparedness. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the extent of the damage or measures being taken to address the flooding.
Meanwhile, citizens are calling for immediate action to ensure that Guwahati does not continue to suffer during every downpour, especially with the monsoon still weeks away.
