GUWAHATI: In a significant step towards enhancing urban resilience, Prof. Rajib Shaw, Director of the India-Japan Laboratory at Keio University, Japan, held a high-level meeting with the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to address the increasing challenges posed by heat waves and climate-related disasters. A globally recognized expert in disaster management and sustainable development, Prof. Shaw shared his insights on disaster risk assessment and strategies for building a more sustainable and resilient Guwahati.
The meeting was chaired by GMC Commissioner Dr. M.S. Lakshmi Priya, and attended by key officials, including Joint Commissioners Kriti Chachra, Dr. Dhruba Jyoti Hazarika, Mrinal Borah, Collector Tulsi Ranjan Kalita, as well as executive officers, engineers, and senior GMC personnel.
During the discussion, Prof. Shaw stressed the urgent need for detailed heat wave studies in Guwahati, highlighting the city’s growing vulnerability to extreme weather events due to rapid urbanization and climate change. He underscored the importance of localized disaster risk assessments and called for the integration of climate resilience into urban planning processes.
Commissioner Dr. Lakshmi Priya expressed GMC’s strong commitment to adopting innovative approaches to disaster risk reduction and sustainable development. She noted that Prof. Shaw’s recommendations would be instrumental in shaping Guwahati’s long-term resilience strategy.
The session concluded with a mutual agreement to foster collaborative frameworks involving GMC, academic institutions, and key stakeholders to advance the city’s efforts in climate adaptation and disaster preparedness.
