GUWAHATI: The Kinner community, in collaboration with the Rainbow Home of Seven Sisters (RHoSS), hosted the Annual Kinner Day on January 7, 2025. This event, initiated in 2023, aims to promote the welfare and empowerment of the Kinner community, who often face disrespect and marginalization from society.
Sister Prema Chowallur, the director and the driving force behind RHoSS, has been instrumental in organizing this event, which seeks to provide shelter, psychological support, and skills training to all marginalized and ostracized individuals and survivors of human trafficking, enabling them to become self-sufficient and reintegrate them into society.
The event featured a keynote address by renowned Assamese singer Abhishruti Bezbaruah, who emphasized the importance of accepting and embracing the Kinner community. Her song "Ore Raati," inspired by the real-life experiences of transgender individuals, has become an anthem for inclusion and acceptance, resonating with audiences across India.
Sandilliya Dulal Goswami, the TRUSTEE of the Rainbow, emphasized the need to accept trans people and how RHoSS works hard for their acceptance and inclusion. Trans rights activist Milin Dutta also spoke at the event, highlighting the diversity within the transgender community and the various identities that exist within it. The event was attended by celebrated Indian singer Zubeen Garg, who expressed his hope that the transgender community would continue to raise their voices and concerns.
The event was a resounding success, with a large turnout from the Kinner community. It concluded with a musical performance by Arghadeep and Tripti, leaving a lasting impression on the audience. RHoSS and its supporters hope to build on this momentum, hosting more events in the future that promote solidarity, empowerment, and celebration of the Kinner community's identity.
