Guwahati: School facilities improved in rural areas of state

For the last six years, the schools with selected facilities in rural areas have been improved.

GUWAHATI: For the last six years, the schools with selected facilities in rural areas have been improved. The Annual Status of Education Reports (ASER) 2024 has reported the considerable improvement of school education in Assam in 2024, comprising from 2018. The selected facilities, mainly mid-day meals, drinking water, boys’ toilets, girls’ toilets, libraries, electricity, and related to computers, have shown improvement in the rural area schools.

According to the ASER rural report 2024, in the category of mid-day meal, a kitchen/shed for cooking mid-day meals is available in 90.4% of schools compared to 92.2% of schools in 2018. No facility for drinking water in school is 10.2% in 2024 compared to 17.5% in 2018. Facilities but no drinking water are available in schools in 10.4% compared to 14.5% in 2018. 79.4% of schools have drinking water facilities compared to 68% in 2018. 1.5% of schools have no boys toilet facilities compared to 3.1% in 2018. 17.6% of schools have toilets but not usable compared to 75.6% in 2018. There are 80.9% of schools that have boys toilets that are usable compared to 21.4% of schools in 2018.

According to the reports, 15.1% of schools do not have separate provisions for girls’ toilets as compared to 2018, when there was 13.3%. There are 6.1% of schools that have separate provisions for girls’ toilets but are locked, as compared to 2018, when 62.2% of schools girls’ toilets were locked. 67.7% of schools have separate provision, unlocked and usable girls toilets compared to 16%. In the library, the reports said that 22.9% of schools do not have a library compared to 26.9% in 2018. 95.5% of schools in rural areas have electricity connections compared to 35.5% of schools in 2018. 88.4% of schools do not have a computer facility available for children to use, and in 2018, 93.5% of schools do not have computers.
