Guwahati: In light of the ongoing heatwave and soaring temperatures across the region, the District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO)-cum-District Mission Coordinator of Kamrup Metropolitan district has issued an official order to revise school timings. The decision, taken as per instructions from the District Commissioner, prioritizes the health and well-being of students and school staff.
According to an order, the rescheduled school timings will come into effect from Wednesday, June 11, and remain valid until Monday, June 16. During this period, schools across the district will follow new timings: Lower Primary (L.P.) Schools will operate from 7:30 am to 11:30 am; Middle English (M.E.) Schools from 7:30 am to 12 pm; and High School/Higher Secondary (H.S./H.S.) Schools from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Aditionally, the directive advises schools to conduct morning assemblies only inside classrooms or in shaded areas, avoiding any outdoor activity during peak heat hours. Schools have been instructed to take adequate precautions to protect children from heat-related illnesses. These include ringing “water bells” three to four times during school hours to remind students to hydrate, ensuring the availability of drinking water, and maintaining proper ventilation in classrooms.
The order also emphasizes that all classrooms must be equipped with functioning fans to provide relief from the extreme heat.
