Guwahati: Assam made a strong mark at the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2024-25 with Guwahati and North Lakhimpur being conferred the ‘Promising Swachh Sheher’ title, highlighting the state’s steady progress in urban sanitation and public hygiene.
Guwahati also achieved the 44th national rank in the 3–10 lakh population category and received both ODF+ (Open Defecation Free Plus) certification and the Garbage-Free City (GFC) One Star rating. These recognitions were presented at a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
Reacting to the development, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “In the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2024-25, Guwahati and North Lakhimpur have been recognized as the Promising Swachh Sheher of Assam. Six cities have received ODF++ certification, all four AMRUT cities are now GFC, and our prominent cities have significantly improved their cleanliness rankings. This is a testament to the collective efforts of urban local bodies, citizens, and the administration.”
Speaking at a press conference, the Guwahati Mayor expressed pride in the capital city’s achievements, “These awards reflect the collective hard work, commitment, and community spirit of the people of Guwahati.”
He further thanked the citizens for their active role and extended appreciation to the Government of India and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for recognizing Guwahati’s sustained efforts under the Swachh Bharat Mission. “This is not just an award—but a motivation to continue building a cleaner, greener, and more inclusive Guwahati,” the Mayor added.
With multiple cities earning national recognition and higher sanitation benchmarks, Assam continues to emerge as a leader in urban cleanliness in the Northeast and beyond.
