GUWAHATI: The Film Fraternity of Assam (FFA) has formally lodged a complaint with the Officer-in-Charge of Chandmari Police Station against Simanta Thakuria, General Secretary of the ‘Pub Guwahati Bihu Sanmilan’ committee, and several others, for allegedly assaulting and criminally intimidating noted Assamese singer Diganta Bharati during a cultural programme held at the AEI Field, Chandmari. The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of April 16, 2025, at approximately 1:35 am. Bharati had been invited to join his wife, acclaimed singer Bhaswati Bharati, on stage for a duet during her live performance. According to the FFA’s complaint, Bharati took the microphone to perform when a group led by Thakuria allegedly interrupted the show, verbally abused him, and forcibly removed him from the stage.

The complaint further claims that Bharati was manhandled and publicly humiliated, particularly over his choice of attire—jeans—which the organizers allegedly deemed inappropriate. No prior notification regarding dress code or performance protocols was reportedly shared with him.

“This assault has caused public humiliation, mental trauma, and physical injury to Diganta Bharati, a respected member of our artistic community,” the FFA stated in its written complaint. “The accused not only disrupted the performance but also disrespected the cultural spirit of Bihu and tarnished the dignity of the event.”

The FFA expressed its disappointment over the lack of any apology or accountability from the organizing committee. “Despite the gravity of the incident, no remorse has been shown. In fact, recent media statements from the committee have only worsened the situation,” the fraternity noted.

To support their claims, the FFA has submitted video footage, photographs, and eyewitness testimonies. They have also pledged full cooperation with the police investigation. At the time of filing this report, police had not yet registered a formal FIR. The incident has sparked outrage among Assam’s cultural and artistic community, with many demanding swift action and accountability to uphold the dignity and safety of performers at public events.
