GUWAHATI: The Brahmaputra Board, in association with the Central Water Commission (CWC), successfully concluded the workshop on floodplain zoning at the Assam Water Centre, Guwahati. The workshop, held today, facilitated comprehensive discussions on flood mitigation strategies and the implementation of the Ministry of Jal Shakti's draft technical guidelines for floodplain zoning.
The event brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Jal Shakti, CWC, Brahmaputra Board, representatives from northeastern states, disaster management authorities and leading technical institutions. In the inaugural session, Dr Ranbir Singh, IAS (R), Chairman, Brahmaputra Board; Rakesh Kumar Verma, IAS, Additional Secretary, DoWR, RD & GR, Government of India; and Anupam Prasad, Member (RM), CWC delivered speeches.
During the event, an eBook providing insights from the Springshed Management Workshop held in November 2024 was also released, reflecting the Board's ongoing commitment to sustainable water resource management.
Key topics in the workshop included flood statistics in the Northeast region, state-specific floodplain zoning initiatives, and advanced methodologies for flood forecasting. Notable presentations were delivered by experts from IIT Guwahati on sedimentation studies and by the North Eastern Space Application Centre on the role of space technology in flood zonation.
The workshop outlined actionable strategies for improving floodplain zoning practices. This includes enhancing inter-state collaboration, adopting scientific approaches for floodplain delineation, and integrating advanced technology for better floodplain management in the NE Region.
Dr. Ranbir Singh, in his concluding remarks, emphasised the importance of continuous dialogue and cooperation among states and agencies to mitigate flood risks effectively. The Brahmaputra Board & Central Water Commission reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with stakeholders to implement robust and sustainable flood management solutions and technical support to the basin states of NER in implementing floodplain zoning.
