GUWAHATI: A group of fifteen enthusiastic youths participated in a Nature Walk at the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden today organised by Aaranyak, a premier biodiversity conservation organization of the region.

This activity was organized as part of Aaranyak’s WeForNature programme, in collaboration with the Assam State Zoo authority, with Zeiss India serving as a supporting partner.

The Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden, covering around 175 hectares in Guwahati, is the largest zoo in Northeast India. It plays a crucial role in ex-situ wildlife conservation, education, and eco-tourism. The zoo houses a wide variety of animal species, including several rare and endangered ones and actively engages in breeding programmes and conservation efforts to protect the native wildlife.

Through the WeForNature programme, Aaranyak (www.aaranyak.org) aims to inspire and engage young individuals by encouraging a deeper connection with nature and wildlife. During the walk, participants explored diverse ecosystems, habitats, and wildlife within the zoo and surrounding forest areas.

The event covered several key topics, including nature observation and documentation, environmental ethics, zoo breeding programmes, the significance of ex-situ conservation, and the role of botanical gardens in conservation efforts.

The event was led by senior scientist in Aaranyak Udayan Borthakur, Biologist of Assam State Zoo Pranjal Mahananda, plant ecology expert and Aaranyak member Mitali Baruah. The overall coordination was handled by Pranab Goswami, organizing officer in Aaranyak, stated a press release.
