Illegal Timber Worth Over Rs 2 lakh Seized in Rani near Assam-Meghalaya Border

In a crackdown on timber smugglers, the Forest department seized a truck laden with illegal timber worth over Rs 2 lakh from Pagelibagan located in Rani near the Assam-Meghalaya border recently.

PALASBARI: In a crackdown on timber smugglers, the Forest department seized a truck laden with illegal timber worth over Rs 2 lakh from Pagelibagan located in Rani near the Assam-Meghalaya border recently.

As per sources, some miscreants have been destroying the environment by chopping down valuable trees. Acting on a tip-off, the forest department conducted a raid, following which the timber-laden pickup truck that was on its way towards Assam from the Meghalaya side was intercepted at Pagelibagan in Rani.

Meanwhile, residents of the Rani area have complained that some forest workers of the Rani forest office and some local people of the area have been cooperating with the timber mafia.
