Guwahati: In a major crackdown on interstate drug trafficking, the Additional District and Sessions Court, Kamrup (M) has sentenced two individuals to 10 years of Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) for smuggling 600 kg of ganja. The convicts, Hira Kumar and Ratan Laskar, were also fined Rs 1 lakh each under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The sentencing follows the successful interception of a large consignment of ganja by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Guwahati Zonal Unit, on January 20, 2021. Acting on intelligence, the NCB officials intercepted a truck (Reg. No. HR 55R 8606) on NH-37 near the Assam Tea Employees Provident Fund office. The contraband was concealed in a secret plywood chamber within the vehicle.
Investigation revealed that the ganja, weighing 600 kg, was being smuggled from Tripura to Uttar Pradesh. Following the seizure, Kumar and Laskar were arrested and later charged under relevant sections of the NDPS Act.
The NCB has reiterated its commitment to curbing the drug menace and has urged citizens to report any drug-related activities through the “MANAS National Narcotics Helpline” on the toll-free number 1933.
