GUWAHATI: A mass awareness meeting on 'Solid Waste Management' (including plastic waste) was organized recently at the B Borooah College auditorium by the Regional Office of the Pollution Control Board, Assam in collaboration with the B Barooah College.
The chief guest of the meeting, Pankaj Chakraborty, Joint Commissioner, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), in his speech appealed to people to reduce, reuse and recycle waste material by changing their lifestyle. He also highlighted many initiatives taken by the GMC for proper management of municipal solid waste in line with those adopted by Indore city in Madhya Pradesh.
Gokul Bhuyan, Senior Environmental Engineer-cum-Regional Officer, Pollution Control Board, delivered a power point presentation on The Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000 and the Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2016 and emphasized the need for compliance and implementation of these Rules. He appealed to the students and participating delegates to start home composting. He explained various methods - Khamb composting, Drum composting, Bokashi composting, Verme composting etc., - for home composting and composting methods suitable for markets, flats, hotels etc.
The Resource Person, Dr Bijoy Goswami, Assistant Professor of B Barooah College, explained various ways and means for plastic waste management. He also explained the detrimental effect of disposal of plastic in water bodies and open burning of plastic. Another Resource Person, Partha Pratim Pathak, Director of M/s Fresh Air Services Pvt Ltd, explained his experiences in management of bio-medical waste in five district - Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Nalbari, Morigaon and Nagaon. He encouraged the young generation to come forward for establishing waste processing units for processing of plastic waste, electronic waste, hazardous waste etc., which are important for the State and at the same time are viable for generation of employments
The meeting was attended by a large number of students of B Booroah College and delegates from various stakeholders, such as members from bazar committees under the GMC, Chambers of Commerce, plastic producers' & manufacturers' associations, and delegates from various industries, hotels, nursing homes etc. The meeting was anchored by Nazneen Rahman, Assistant Engineer of the Pollution Control Board. The welcome address was delivered given by Dr Diganta Choudhury, HoD, Department of Chemistry & Co-ordinator, IQAC of B Borooah College.
