GUWAHAT: A crucial meeting between representaives of the Tai Ahom community and tribal communities was held in Guwahati on Tuesday in the presence of ministers Dr Ranoj Pegu and Pijush Hazarika.

The six communities of Assam – Koch-Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Chutia, Matak, Moran and tea tribes – have been demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status while the existing ST communities are opposed to granting ST status to the six communities on the ground that they would suffer politically, educationally and socially if this happens. To sort out the differences between the two parties, the meeting was held today. While no decision was taken in the meeting, it opened the door for further discussion between the Ahom community and tribal communities.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Coordination Committee of Tribal Organizations of Assam (CCTOA), the All Assam Tai Ahom Students’ Union, and the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad.
