NSC Guwahati blends tradition and innovation with new science facilities

Guwahati: The National Science Centre (NSC), Guwahati — a unit under the National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Culture, Government of India—inaugurated three new facilities at its Khanapara premises on Friday. These additions aim to bridge indigenous wisdom with modern science while embracing digital convenience.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Keshab Mahanta, Minister of Revenue & Disaster Management, Information Technology, Science & Technology, and Climate Change, Government of Assam, who served as the Chief Guest.

In his address, Minister Keshab Mahanta lauded the Traditional Medicines of North East gallery for recognizing the deep-rooted relationship between local communities and traditional herbs. He underscored the growing global recognition of India’s ancient medical systems, particularly in the fields of primary healthcare and chronic illness management. He also pointed out the acknowledgment of traditional medicine by the World Health Organization.

He lauded the efforts of the National Science Centre in establishing a medicinal plant garden that consolidates various medicinal plant species found across the Northeastern states. Similarly, the setting up of the Traditional Medicine Gallery was described by the minister as a highly timely step toward preserving, showcasing, and studying the region’s age-old medical and healing systems in a structured and scientific manner.

Minister Mahanta added, “In the days to come, this medicinal garden and traditional medicine gallery will play a significant role in facilitating the preservation, promotion, and scientific study of the region’s rich medicinal plant resources and age-old healing wisdom, enhancing them through integration with modern science. I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to the National Council of Science Museums and the National Science Centre, Guwahati, for this timely and commendable initiative.”

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Jhuma Ghosh.
