GUWAHATI: The Kamrup (metro) Deputy Commissioner's office has started functioning from its new address at Hengrabari, Khadi Haat. On Monday, the shifting process was completed and from today the office has started functioning from its new location.

It was an emotional moment for all the employees of the Kamrup (metro) DC's office to leave behind their old office at Panbazar, Kachari. The construction of this office had begun in 1954 under the direction of the then Chief Minister of Assam, Bishnuram Medhi. The office was inaugurated on June 12, 1956. Of course, at that time it was the DC's office of undivided Kamrup district. After the bifurcation of the Kamrup district into Kamrup (metro) and Kamrup (rural) in 2003, the Kamrup (rural) DC's office was shifted to Amingaon while the Kamrup (metro) DC's office remained in Panbazar, Kachari. In its 68-year old history, the DC's office in Panbazar has seen 47 DCs take charge of the administration of the district.

Meanwhile, while addressing media persons at the old DC's office complex today, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that demolition of the old DC's office would begin from today. He also said that within seven days, the Guwahati Police Commissionerate office would be shifted to the office of the office of the Commissioner of Lower Assam Division. The State Bank of India (SBI) branch and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) office in Panbazar, Kachari will also be shifted within 10 days. "The GMC office will not be demolished. It will be turned into an exhibition corner," said the Chief Minister.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court will not be touched as of now but the office of the Forest Department near the ropeway in Panbazar will be shifted.

The Chief Minister said that after the offices are shifted, the vacated land of 5-7 bighas will be an open-space area where people can come and enjoy the beauty of the Brahmaputra. Later, a beautification project may be taken up.
