Rajkanya Baruah Accident Case: Joseph Marak Succumbs to Injuries at GMCH

The deceased was undergoing treatment at GMCH after the incident on October 2. He had already lost both his legs in the accident.

Guwahati: Joseph Marak, a victim in the Rajkanya Baruah drunk and hit case, died at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday (GMCH).

Following the incident on October 2, the victim was treated at GMCH. In the accident, he had already lost both of his legs. Due to laying in bed for lengthy periods of time, blood circulation to the victim's lungs was disturbed. Septic had developed all over his body, and he died as a result.

According to the GMCH Superintendent, Dr. Abhijit Sarma, Marak died due to sepsis and pulmonary embolism, a complexity caused by his long bedridden condition. Dr. Sarma said that he was addmitted in the hospital on October 2 and the attending doctors performed a surgery on the following day. Initially he was kept in the Orthopaedic Department and was shifted to the ICU later.

While ruling out other cause of his death, the GMCH superintendent said, " Sepsis had developed in his body. That apart another condition, in which blood clotting occured in the lung , might form in his body."

Dr. Sarma also said that the attending doctors observed reneal function disarrangement in Marak on October 23. He added that Marak suffered from a sudden cardiac arrest this morning and the attending doctors could revive him. However, he breathed his last at 10 am despite endeavors of the doctors to save his life.

Rajkanya Baruah, a finalist in the 2016 Miss India pageant, was drunk as she returned from a city hotel after curfew hours. In the city's Rukminigaon, she drove over eight PWD personnel who were in such state. She has been in judicial prison since October 8, after first being released on bond. A charge sheet in the case has now been filed in a lower court by the municipal police. It has also been brought to the attention of the Gauhati High Court.

Her accident came into light after widespread disagreement emerged as she was given bail right after the incident happened. Netizens were upset with the fact that after one of the laborers lost his leg in the incident how was she set free from custody. Rajkanya was arrested on October 7, five days after the accident. 

After the incident, the Kamrup (Metro) district administration issued a show-cause notice to Taj Vivanta to submit CCTV camera footage and the guest list of the event held on October 1. The hotel management was asked to specify the timings of the event and details about the guests and organizers. It has been alleged that the event continued till late at night, violating COVID protocol and curfew timings.
