GUWAHATI: State Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu made a statement recently that 'if teachers have no problem in using Facebook, WhatsApp, etc., where lies the problem for them in using the Shiksha Setu App?" In its response to this statement, the Sadou Asom Sanmilito Shikshak Mancha (SASSM) made it clear that 'we never opposed giving our attendance digitally, and nor do we oppose it now.'

In a statement issued to the media, SASSM president Ranjit Barthakur said, "RIIMS, an app that the SSA asked us to download, violates our privacy, and hence we oppose giving attendance through our mobile phones. We did move the court on this issue. In its affidavit before the court, the government said that it hadn't asked the teachers to download the RIIMS app on their personal mobile phones. The government then supplied tablets to the schools for giving attendance digitally. However, giving attendance through tablets given by the government is full of anomalies. We requested the government to remove the anomalies. However, the government has failed to remove the anomalies even now. The minister made his statement, taking a dig at the teachers when the government failed to fix the problems with the system. The minister cited teachers using Facebook in order to hush up the department's failure to fix the problems with the tablets supplied by the government. The moot point remains that teachers don't tag any individuals while using Facebook, but the software of the app given by the government has the possibility of tagging teachers, thereby violating teachers' privacy."

Barthakur further said, "We are not opposed to registering our attendance in the digital media. However, teachers won't go for any agreement that may compel them to register their attendance in their personal mobile phones."
